Chemical and physical properties

Ammonium hydroxide is basically a solution of ammonia in water. It’s also known as ammoniacal water, aqueous ammonia or ammonia solution. Although the name suggests NH4OH, it is impossible to isolate this compound as these ions are only a minority in solution. Instead, ammonia deprotonates water (H2O) to give NH4+ and OH-. As a consequence, it’s more commonly referred to as NH3(aq).

NH3 + H2O ⇋ NH4+ + OH−

At 15 degree Celsius, the density of a saturated ammonia solution is 0.88 g/mol, containing 35% ammonia (by mass), a molarity of approximately 18 mol/L and 308 grams of ammonia per Litre of solution (g/L w/v). Interestingly, at higher temperatures, density decreases and molarity in ammonia solutions increases.

As a consequence, if saturated solutions are prepared at cold temperatures, when they’re warmed, the ammonia concentration in solution drops and excess is released as ammonia gas. In extreme cases, unsealing a container with ammonia could burst or rupture if stored in warm conditions. In addition, old preparations of ammonia solutions should be titrated before use, as concentrations may deviate from the original solution.
