Chemical Properties of Acetone

Acetone, also known as propanone, is a colourless, flammable liquid with a well-known fruity odour and a pungent taste. As the simplest form of ketone, it is highly miscible with water, as well as other solvents including benzene, ether, alcohol and chloroform.

In industry, acetone is most commonly used as a solvent in many different processes, but it’s also an important reagent in processes like the manufacture of methyl methacrylate and bisphenol A.

The current method of producing acetone is via the cumene process. However, other processes include the direct oxidation of propylene (the Wacker-Hoechst process), or the conversion of propylene to propanol, which can then be oxidised to acetone.
