Sodium Hypochlorite: Uses & Applications
Sodium hypochlorite (NaCIO) may also be known as sodium hypochlorite solution, sodium chloride oxide, or – probably its most common name – bleach. In household bleach, other chemicals are usually added to give the product a particular odour or coloration, and thickeners are used to give it viscosity.
Similar to household application, sodium hypochlorite is used on a commercial scale for disinfecting and cleaning. It is also used for water treatment, most commonly in swimming pools. As chlorine in its natural gas state cannot be practically added to swimming pool water, a slightly alkaline solution of chlorine dissolved in water and sodium hydroxide is instead used to chlorinate the water.
Sodium hypochlorite NaClO solution is produced on an enormous scale throughout the world, and is a by-product of chlorine manufacture.

Higher concentrations of sodium hypochlorite can be quite corrosive and should be handled in a responsible manner by qualified personnel. Please refer to the relevant safety data sheet (MSDS), which can be found to the right of this page.
As a general guide, note that ordinary household bleach is approximately 5% sodium hypochlorite NaClO, with a ph of around 11. At ReAgent, we supply solutions from 0.3% upwards, along with low bromine solutions.
